Taiping is a town located in northern Perak, Malaysia. It is the second largest town in Perak after Ipoh, the state capital. Taiping took over Kuala Kangsar's role as the state capital from 1876 to 1937, but was then replaced by Ipoh. Its development slowed down after that, but in recent years the town has begun developing rapidly again. Taiping is also known for being the wettest town in Peninsular Malaysia. The average annual rainfall is about 4,000mm just in Taiping itself. Its unusual rainfall has also led to a fertile collection of flora and century-old rain trees in the Taiping Lake Garden and also the famous Maxwell Hill.
In around Taiping there are more than 8 medical facilities that are easily accessible, for instance Taiping Hospital, Selama General Hospital and Taiping General Clinic just to name a few. Other than that, due to the recent local development plan, there are now more hotels (Flemington Hotel, SSL Traders Hotel, etc) and shopping centers and supermarkets available (Taiping Sentral Mall, Aeon Mall, etc).
To get around, the compact town center is easily explored on foot. For trips further afield, taxis are available for hire. Stage buses fan out in all directions serving the suburbs and the rural hinterland in a very fare price and they cover a wide range of location in and out of Taiping.
