Batu Gajah (population 34,000) is a town located in the state of Perak in Malaysia, about 24 km from Ipoh, the Perak state capital. The name Batu Gajah, which literally means "stone elephant" in the Malay language, is presumably derived from 2 large boulders that resembled elephants found along the Kinta River. Folklore claims that huge elephant figures were made of stones to scare away the elephants that destroyed the villagers' sugar cane crops. Batu Gajah is a very quiet town, ideal for pensioners and young families.
In this peaceful town, there are varieties of hawker stalls and restaurants and supermarkets. There are also a number of education facilities, hospitals and historical buildings available in this town. There are bus and taxi services available to move around in this town.
For trips further afield, taxis are also available for hire and stage buses fan out in all directions serving the suburbs and the rural hinterland in a very fare price and they cover a wide range of location in and out of Batu Gajah. Besides that KTM Komuter also makes Batu Gajah as one of their stops.
