District Guide
Selayang is situated in the Gombak district of Selangor and is one of the state’s more developed towns. Its location is pivotal for part of its success, being a perfect “rest town” between Malaysia’s main city, KL (Kuala Lumpur) and tourist hotspot, the Batu Caves. Either it can be considered as such or as a bustling city is up to the individual’s agenda as the area offers both modern living with peace of mind. This duality is made literal with much debate surrounding whether its coordinates belong solely to KL or Gombak. Human infrastructure include hospitals (Hospital Selayang, most famously), schools (the Selayang Mara University of Technology or UITM Selayang), luxury apartments (Magna Villa) and malls (Selayang Capitol).
It even has its own Tesco Extra. The business sector in the area is booming as well, with Salayang’s industrial district, Kawasan Industri Selayang Indah, building more factories in its vicinity. Natural recreational spots include the Selayang Hot Springs and nearby attractions the Titiwangsa Mountains, the Batu Dam and the Commonwealth Park. An active and engaging presence is that of FRIM or the Forest Reserve Institute Malaysia that specializes in the preservation of flora and fauna in the area and provides facilities that help one get closer to nature in mind and body. FRIM provides a laboratory and recreational challenges through its trek routes and sports centre.
