Gelang Patah has its beginnings as a fishing village on the shores of the Pulai River and the Straits of Malacca. Gelang Patah has since developed with the vital commercial and logistics hub of
Port Tanjung Pelepas. Southern Industrial & Logistics Clusters (SiLC) was built by the UEM Sunrise group to support green industries in advanced technologies, biotechnology and integrated logistics. Due to SiLC’s 1,300 acre industrial park, Gelang Patah has grown many fold in its capability to support the industrial sector within the greater metropolitan area of Iskandar Puteri, in the southern end of the state of Johor.
Gelang Patah has many highways built throughout its vast forest lands, offering convenient and quick access to its neighbouring towns and cities, such as Horizon Hills, Bukit Indah, Educity, Medini, Forest City and Puteri Harbour. There are many of the minor internal roads and major highways that run through Gelang Patah, among them is the Pontian link, a four lane expressway, which leads to the E3 Second Link Expressway (route E3) that connects to the Senai Airport. On the Southern end of E3 is the Malaysia-Singapore border, merely 15 minutes away from the Gelang Patah town to the Tuas Checkpoint in Singapore. The North – South Expressway which runs along the entire length of Malaysia allows access to the neighbouring state of Melaka.
Gelang Patah is definitely an area with an abundance of green trees and virgin forests, and the Pulai River offers many relaxing spots along its shores. Within residential areas there are an abundance of gardens and parks to spend time with family and friends. Popular outdoor parks include the Melody Park, and the SIREH Park. Sports locations nearby include the Educity Sports Complex, gyms, and public community halls and fields which cater for badminton, soccer, futsal, sepak takraw, and basketball.

The Korean community is big here, catered by many specialty shops and restaurants in adjacent Bukit Indah, Sunway, and Medini areas.
Gelang Patah is famous for the Malay traditional food of nasi briyani and otak-otak. At fishing villages located next to the Pulai River, there are an abundance of roadside stalls, riverside restaurants where one can experience the culinary delights of seafood. More fancy restaurants and international flavours may be found in the nearby areas of Bukit Indah, Perling and the Johor Bahru town center. Nearby upmarket malls in the Iskandar Puteri and Nusajaya areas include AEON Bukit Indah, Giant, Tesco, GP Mall, Sunway Citrine Hub, Paradigm Mall, and the Mall of Medini.
With the extensive network of highways around Gelang Patah, a family can easily send their children to any of the nearby primary and secondary schools, including vernacular Chinese, Malay and Tamil schools. Higher quality education is abundant, with most of Johor’s 14 international schools located close by in Educity/Medini, such as Sunway International School, Tenby, Excelsior, Sri Omega, Raffles American School, Marlborough College, and Dwi Emas International School.
Since the 2000s, there has been tremendous promotion and development of Iskandar Puteri, and Gelang Patah has benefited from its spillover effects in terms of office and commercial development and tourism. Examples of this include theme parks such Legoland, and SanRio Hello Kitty Town. Essential commercial areas bring an influx of local and foreign investments and job opportunities, especially with Port Tanjung Pelepas, SiLC, Hotel Jen Puteri Harbour, Pinewood Studios, and Frost & Sullivan, all within easy driving distance.
Residential properties in Gelang Patah are a mix of both freehold and leasehold. As Gelang Patah is in the beginning stages of developing into a growing economic boom town, this explains the median price psf of MYR 412, and a median price of MYR 540,000.
