As the decades passed, Pekan Lama in
Ipoh became more important due to its strategic location between North and South Malaysia, and thanks to its optimal location next to the major North – South Expressway, in lieu of using the older Federal Route 1. Federal Route 5 connects Jelapang, Perak to South Malaysia via Skudai, Johor and connects to Jalan Lahat (A1). Other major roads like the Jalan Tambun (A13) and Jalan Lahat (A1) is also known as the Ipoh Outer Ring Road, connect Ipoh to Chemor, Tambun, and Menglembu. Kuala Kangsar, Taiping and Gopeng are the nearest major towns, a relatively easy drive away thanks to the existing trunk roads, and so are the nearby towns of Batu Gajah, and Kampar. The nearest airport is the Sultan Azlan Shah Airport, merely 11 minutes’ drive away. The Ipoh Railway Station is just 6 minutes away. The Sri Maju Bus station also offer economical travel throughout Malaysia. The main roads surrounding Pekan Lama include Jalan Sultan Iskandar, and Jalan Sultan Idris Shah.
Pekan Lama is surrounded by pockets of verdant greenery and spacious parks, such as the People’s Park, First Garden Lake Park, Dr Seenivasgam Park, and Sultan Abdul Aziz Recreation Park, where one’s family and children and friends can find recreational space to relax and absorb nature. One can also find relaxation along the banks of the Kinta river, as well as the waterfall nearby. Another body of calm water is the Tasik Taman Indah, complete with jogging track.

Pekan Lama is famous for local foods of Ipoh nga choi kai (chicken with sprouts), chicken hor fun (shredded chicken), tau fu fa (beancurd), yong tau foo, and Ipoh White Coffee.
For delicious international foods and cafes, these are found in abundance in malls, such as the Aeon Mall Ipoh, Mydin Mall, and Ipoh Parade.
Within the vicinity of Pekan Lama are many national schools, such as the SJK(C) Yuk Choy, SJK(C) Ave Maria Convent, SMK Sam Tet, SMK Convent Ipoh, and the reknown Methodist Girls School. International schools include Tenby Schools, Asia Metropolitan International School, Imperial International School, and Hibiscus International School. Institutions of higher education include Quest International University with its Faculty of Medicine, Olympia College Ipoh, Wawasan Open University, and Universiti Kuala Lumpur Royal College of Medicine Perak (UniKL RCMP).
Since the early turn of the century, the food industry and tourism has been vital drivers in Ipoh’s economy. With the focus of Ipoh being a must-see tourist layby spot, especially for food, plus the opening of the Sunway Lost World of Tambun by property developer Sunway Group, the increasing population in Ipoh should have no problems with looking for job opportunities in and around Ipoh.
