Selayang

Selayang or KL North is a town located within the Gombak district in Selangor state. Bandar Baru Selayang located some 2km away is main commercial hub and home to the Majlis Perbandaran Selayang. Meanwhile, Bandar Baru Selayang is also the main residential area in Selayang and there are consist of landed property, condominiums, and apartments.  The Selayang area is synonymous with Selayang Hospital and Pasar Borong Selayang (Selayang Wholesale Market). Selayang neighbours Kepong and Batu Caves.

Selayang is easily accessible from KL city centre via Jalan Kuching which is the main connection from the city. It is also accessible via MRR2, Jalan Kepong and Jalan Batu Caves.  It can also be accessed via public transportation such as the local bus line, KTM Komuter aligning at Taman Wahyu station, Batu Caves station or Kepong Sentral station and then transfer to a bus or taxi to get to your destination within Selayang.

Selayang is a vibrant township offering access to a host of amenities such as schools, hospitals, recreational, retail outlets, eateries and many more, for the community’s lifestyle needs.

As Selayang is rather huge, there are 64 primary schools and 28 secondary schools in the area serving the educational needs of the community. Amongst the secondary schools are SMK Seri Salayang, SMK Hillcrest, SMK Darul Ehsan,SMK St Mary and SK Selayang Utama while some primary schools include SK 1 Selayang Baru, SK Kampung Selayang, SJKC Kheow Bin Batu Caves, SJKT Batu Caves and SRA Kg Sungai Tua Baharu. There are more educational options in neighbouring townships. While there are no international schools in Selayang itself, it is surrounded by several reputed international schools a short distance away. The nearest being Garden International and Mont Kiara International School in nearby Mont Kiara neighbourhood while The Wesley Methodist School in Sentul is also not too far away.

Selayang Hospital is the township’s main medical hub. There is also the community clinic as well as private clinics serving the community’s medical needs. In addition, within close vicinity are several reputed private medical centres such as Park City Medical Centre, KPJ Tawakkal and IJN.

As mentioned above, Selayang is known for the Pasar Borong Selayang, wholesale market where one can get plenty of fresh vegetables, meats and fruits at wholesale prices. The market is being frequented by those in the food industry as well as individuals. The Pasar Rakyat Selayang is also another popular market frequented by the community. There are also markets in respective housing areas around Selayang for the community’s convenience. Aside from that, the Pasar Malam Bandar Baru Selayang and Pasar Malam Selayang Indah takes place every Thursday and Saturday night  respectively. Other Pasar Malam operates on different nights across its many housing estates. For those for fancy jungle produces, do visit the Pasar Tani Borong Selayang. In addition, there are also supermarkets, mini-markets and convenience stores within proximity such as Sri Ternak Food Mart, NSK Trade City Selayang, Tesco Extra Selayang, Pasaraya Okay and Eng Hock Mini Market. Of course, there are popular convenience stores available within vicinity like 7-11, 99 Speedmart, KK and MyNews.

There are 2 neighbourhood malls namely Selayang Mall and Selayang Capitol Kompleks. However, there are nothing much in these 2 malls as they are not being taken care off well by its management. Fortunately, though Selayang is surrounded by several other townships that offers better shopping experiences such as AEON Mall Metro Prima, Kepong and  Plaza Arcardia Desa Park City. Other shopping malls are also short distances away.

Selayang is surrounded by some nature attractions that serve the recreational needs of its community. Within Selayang itself is the MPS Sri Siantan Sports Centre, a community sports centre which houses a public swimming pool and many other sports amenities. There is also the Selayang Stadium for the community’s sports events and tournaments.  There is also public libraries within the township to encourage reading habits. The Taman Rekreasi Bandar Baru Selayang and  Bukit Lagong Recreational Forest are popular outdoor recreational spots. Other recreational areas nearby include Batu Caves, FRIM, and Templar’s Park further away nearer to Rawang.

When it comes to food, there are various options available such as Bandar Baru Selayang Food Court, Spice Affair Restaurant, Restoran One Selayang, Choong Steam Fish Restaurant and Selayang Food Court. Alternatively, there are more food options available in nearby townships.

Selayang has a active business community and is surrounded by several industrial estates such as Prima Selayang Industrial Park and Taman Selayang Utama Industrial Park which houses mainly light and medium industries such as food manufacturing and more.

Since Selayang area has a diverse population, it is also surrounded by many places of worship serving the community’s religious obligations such as Masjid Al-Firdaus, Xian Fa Shi Gong Temple, Selayang Chinese Methodist Church,Sri Maha Mariamman Temple and St Matthew’s Church.

Over the years, there has been many residential projects in Selayang vicinity due to its close proximity to the city and strategic location. While there are some freehold properties, most of the properties in Selayang area are leasehold. Properties are still within the affordable range with a median price of RM 345,000 or median price psf of RM 327.
