Johor

Johor is one of the thirteen states in Malaysia located at the southern-most portion of Peninsular Malaysia. The Straits of Johor separates the south of Johor from Singapore. The state capital city and royal city of Johor is Johor Bahru. Formerly known as Tanjung Puteri, the old state capital is Johor Lama.

The Iskandar Development Region and South Johor Economic Region is a major development zone in Johor. High-rise office towers, large shopping complexes and modern shop-office lots are some of the commercial developments in this zone. Residential areas in this zone include Bukit Indah and Horizon Hills townships. Popular residential developments include high-rise, luxurious condominiums with five-star in-house facilities, serviced apartments, terrace houses, semi-detached houses and bungalows. Property outlook in Johor especially in the Iskandar region is very robust with high demand from local investors as well as Singaporeans.

You will experience blue skies and bright sun for most parts of the year in Johor with its tropical rainforest climate. Average temperature can reach a high of 32˚C. The monsoon season starts from November to February bringing rain blowing from the South China Sea. While rainfall is generally not very heavy, several towns in the state have experienced floods during the monsoon season in recent years.

Johor has been one of the major ports of Malaysia throughout its history. Hence, its culture has been shaped by visitors and traders. Major influences include the Bugis, Javanese and Arabs. The original language spoken by Johoreans is Johor-Riau Malay. Cekak Musang and Teluk Belanga are cultural representations of Johor and can be found in many collar designs for clothing. Other traditional clothing includes Kurung Johor, Kurung Riau and Belah Kebaya Panjang. Zapin and Kuda Kepang are cultural dances of the state. Laksa Johor, Mee Bandung Muar and Nasi Beriani Gam are some of the popular local dishes of Johor.
