Sarawak is the largest state in Malaysia. It is one of the two Malaysian states situated on the island of Borneo. Located on the northwest of this island, Sarawak borders Sabah to the northeast, Indonesia to the south and it surrounds the country of Brunei. The state’s capital is Kuching.
Known as ‘Land of the Hornbills’, Sarawak is famous for these beautiful birds and other wildlife. This state is home to the longest river in Malaysia, Rajang River. Major industries driving the state’s economy are agriculture, forestry and tourism. Some of the popular tourist attractions in this state are Gunung Mulu National Park and the Rainforest World Music Festival.
Many commercial and residential property developments are concentrated in major towns such as Kuching, Miri, Sibu and Bintulu. The heaviest rainfall is usually recorded in January.
The population of Sarawak consists of many ethnic groups. The major groups are Iban, Chinese, Malay, Bidayuh, Melanau and Orang Ulu. There are more than 40 sub-ethnic groups, each with their own dialects and traditions. Popular traditional festivals celebrated in Sarawak include gawai dayak, gawai kenyalang, kaul festival and many more. This state is also famous for its longhouses.
