Rifle Range

Rifle Range is a longstanding residential high-rise flat development situated along Jalan Padang Tembak, within the active district of Ayer Itam, Penang. Completed in 1970, Penang's first public high-rise housing project was developed by the Malaysian federal government as part of a broader urban improvement effort.

The leasehold development comprises 3,699 residential units across nine blocks, each rising 18 floors high. These homes, mainly featuring compact two-bedroom layouts, have been made to suit the needs of city dwellers looking for functional and cost-effective living spaces. Instead of luxurious fittings, the focus is on practicality and essential everyday conveniences.

Unique Selling Points

Rifle Range earns recognition for its pioneering role in Penang's housing development landscape. As the earliest public housing initiative in the state, the project marked a turning point in the region's urban planning.

It was part of a federal initiative to address the housing demand in a growing city, offering residents a reliable residential solution in a rapidly developing urban zone. The project's working-class roots remain embedded in its character, contributing to a culturally diverse and tightly-knit community.

Although the architectural style reflects its era, various efforts have been made to rejuvenate the development. A key example is the 2010 design competition, which aimed to envision the Rifle Range as a more sustainable and community-driven residential zone. While maintaining its core identity, these efforts show the development's adaptability in modern times.
