Pulau Melaka
Pulau Melaka is a man-made island located just off the coast of Melaka City, offering a unique blend of landmark attractions, ambitious future developments, and direct access to the rich heritage of a UNESCO World Heritage City. Formed through land reclamation, this island is connected to the mainland by a bridge and is a focal point for significant tourism and economic projects. Pulau Melaka is most renowned for being the home of the magnificent Masjid Selat Melaka (Malacca Straits Mosque). Inaugurated in 2006, this mosque is an architectural marvel built on stilts over the water, creating a 'floating' illusion during high tide. Its design blends Middle Eastern and Malay craftsmanship, featuring a prominent 30-metre-tall minaret that also functions as a lighthouse. The island also hosts the JT International School Melaka, which offers a Cambridge curriculum. A significant portion of the island's future is shaped by the Melaka Gateway project, a major development initiative led by KAJ Development Sdn. Bhd. Although the project has been scaled down from its original master plan, its core focus is now the development of a premier cruise terminal. Set to be the largest cruise jetty in Southeast Asia, the MICT is projected to begin operations in the third quarter of 2026. The terminal is designed to accommodate some of the world's largest cruise ships, positioning Melaka as a key stopover destination between Singapore and Phuket. This development is a key component of the state's strategy to boost the tourism economy and is expected to create thousands of jobs. The development of Pulau Melaka has been complex, with a history of ambitious projects facing various challenges. Over the years, state authorities and developers have worked to rehabilitate and revitalise projects on the island. News reports from previous years have noted the presence of vacant commercial shop lots, reflecting the island's evolving development cycle. Pulau Melaka's strategic location provides convenient access to the key facilities and attractions of Melaka City.A short drive connects the island to some of the city's most popular retail destinations: Recognised as the largest shopping mall in Malacca, it offers a vast selection of international brands, dining, and entertainment options. One of the city's first major shopping malls, it hosts nearly 200 stores and has been a local favourite since its opening in 1994. The city's primary medical facilities are readily accessible, including:Malacca General Hospital Pantai Hospital Ayer Keroh The island is connected to the Melaka Sentral bus terminal, the city's main transit hub which is approximately 5km away and provides express bus services to major cities like Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. The nearest railway station is the Pulau Sebang/Tampin station, located about 38km from the city center.
