Labis is located in Johor’s district of Segamat, considered to have the most dynamic city centre next to Johor Bahru. Labis is not only in the area but is its second largest township. Although it is in Segamat and is of a large size, it is actually quite the quaint town that specializes in rubber. The various theories of the origin of the area’s name are rather comical, one sighting it to be derived from the Malay word for the grass the river terrapins eat, Labi.
This is so because river terrapins exist in large quantities all over the area. English colonial generals then supposedly put an S behind it for it to become plural, oblivious that it was not indeed the correct word all along. Ways to get to and from the town include using its train on the Keretapi Tanah Melayu Railway line and by road. The former brings one to and from the capital of Johor, Johor Bahru and the latter via Federal Route 1.
