Motorists in Klang will have to wait a bit longer before they are allowed to use the recently completed RM220 million bridge in town, reported The Star.
According to a spokesperson from the Selangor Public Works Department (JKR), Klang’s third bridge is expected to be officially opened by the end of May 2017. However, media reports published last month revealed that it was supposed to open in April.
The JKR spokesman said the roads linking both ends of the bridge have been finished, and there are just some minor touch-up works.
“The bridge will connect the northern and southern parts of Klang through Jalan Goh Hock Huat and Jalan Sungai Bertih to Persiaran Raja Muda Musa,” he said.
Meanwhile, Klang Municipal Councillor Jeremy Khoo revealed that the reason for the delay in the opening is that electricity has yet to be connected to the bridge.
“We are aware that there has been some technical glitches and electricity has yet to be supplied,” said Khoo who is a member of the infrastructure committee in the Klang Municipal Council.
“JKR told us that it is not safe to open the bridge without electricity as it is dangerous for motorists to use it at night especially when the traffic lights are not functioning,” he said, adding that he is confident that it would be opened in May.
Despite the absence of electricity, some impatient motorists are already using the bridge after squeezing through the concrete barriers to get to the opposite side.
Furthermore, traffic lights along Jalan Goh Hock Huat that are intended to manage the flow of vehicles heading towards North Klang are not working.
