Kemaman is a district in Terengganu. It is situated on the coast of the South China Sea. Kemaman district is bordered by Dungun to the north and the state of Pahang to the south. Kemaman is administered by the Kemaman Municipal Council.
The town of Chukai is Kemaman’s administrative and economic centre. Kemaman is administered by its local council, Kemaman Municipal Council. Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek is the Member of Parliament for Kemaman. He is also the Malaysia Youth and Sports Minister.
Kemaman’s famous for the turtle sanctuary in Ma’Daerah, called Ma’Daerah Turtle Sanctuary which provides an undisturbed beach for nesting turtles and protection for eggs. This turtle conservation centre is operated under the joint auspices of Department of Fisheries, BP and WWF-Malaysia.
There is also a new developed zoo in Kemaman which offers many variety of wildlife for the tourists and locals. This is the first zoo in east coast region of Peninsular Malaysia. As for other recreational activities, kayaking, windsurfing or kite surfing is available for rent.
Getting here is very convenient as one could choose to either drive, by air or bus / coaches. One unique trade about Kijal is that in certain locations coming into Kijal, there are ‘Elephant Crossing’ signs. Wild elephants forage at night and may cross the highway to other feeding grounds within their roaming range.
Travelling within the town, due to the scenic environment that this town has, the public transportations covers limited places.
