Relau is a low to medium cost residential area in Timor Laut (Island), Penang mainly comprising of high rises. However, terrace houses can still be seen in some small scattered parts of the area. Relau is one of the more popular but smaller districts and is located further south of the island. It is neighboured by Bukit Jambul to its north and Bayan Baru to its south. Relau is also situated on elevated land and is surrounded by mountains.
Relau is another one of the very old and established townships of Penang and comprised mainly of agricultural land until the early 1980’s. However due to the growing lack of land on the Penang Island and an increasing need for of residential developments then. The lands began to be cleared for development. It is situated only 20 minutes away from Georgetown, the capital of Penang and the Penang International Airport is very near at an approximate 10 minutes’ drive. Even more convenient is the location of both the Penang bridges, where both old and new ones are only 10 minutes away. Rapid Penang bus routes 301 and 306 include stops within Relau, thus connecting the neighbourhood with Georgetown proper, Queensbay Mall, and the Air Itam and Paya Terubong suburbs. This makes it very convenient to access the nearby amenities, like parks, malls, schools, clinics, mini markets, places of worship and banks. Those who are health conscious would benefit from the parks that are located nearby, like the Relau Metropolitan Park which is the second largest recreational park within Penang Island, Lebuh Nipah Park, Solok Bukit Jambul Small Park, Neighbourhood Perk Pekaka and Energy Bagua Sunway Tunas.
There are many malls in the surrounding area, namely Kompleks Bukit Jambul. Queensbay Mall, D’Plazza Mall and Penang Upton @ Bukit Jambul which provides convenient grocery shopping for residents of the neighbourhood with a wide range of local and international products. There are also many mini-markets in the vicinity, like Leong Hin Mini Market, Hiew Mini Market, Sunrise Mini Market, Thirupathy Mini Market and Perniagaan Sri Juwara Mini Market. Restaurants around the area are Penangbayantree, KimShen Coffee Shop. Cherry Blossom Thai Restaurant, The Spice Kitchen & Bar and Natchiyar Corner Café where you can get to explore local and international flavours. There are also many night markets around the area, such as Thursday Night Market, Friday Night Market, Saturday Night Market, Sungai Dua Night Market and Pasar Malam Sungai Ara.
Leisure spots and tourist hotspots that are located nearby are Spiral Bridge of Hope (Jambatan Harapan), Sky Walk, Rainbow Skywalk, Penang Street Art and Penang Little India. There are also many places in the vicinity that those who enjoy nightlife can go to. These places also attract foreigners especially during the weekends. Places like Level 1 Pub & Bistro, GL Bistro & Pub, Pi Karoxx, Vikendi and Johnchua House are quite famous in the area. You can practically get everything that you want in Relau.
SRK Seri Relau, SRJK (C) Min Sin, SJK (T) Sungai Ara, Fairview International School Penang and Straits International School Penang are some of the many private and public schools that are located within a few minutes’ drive. Kek Lok Si Temple, The Charismatic Church of Penang, Surau Nur Hidayah Kampung Jalan Tengah, Sri Mahamariamman Temple and Gurdwara Sahib Bayan Baru Penang are located close by as well. In case of medical emergency, there are clinics located nearby, such as Klinik Relau, Klinik Bersatu Relau, Klinik Medicris, Klinik Singapore Relau and H Clinic @ Dx Clinic where locals and tourist can go to. Banks are also aplenty in the area with the likes of Public Bank, Hong Leong Bank, RHB Banbk, CIMB Bank Jalan Mahsuri Bayan Baru and Bank Rakyat. There are a few post offices nearby like Pos Laju, and Gelugor Post Office.
