Butterworth is the largest urban settlement in the city of Seberang Perai, Penang. George Town, the capital city of Penang, lies east of Butterworth and came into being a transportation hub due to its close proximity to George Town. Butterworth grew into a transportation hub in the latter half of the 19th century and was the transit point for shipping tin to George Town for smelting and export. Butterworth is a town that lies at the southernmost tip of the North Seberang Perai District.

Since Butterworth is considered a transportation hub, there are numerous highways that run through this town. Among the highways that run through Butterworth is Butterworth – Kulim Expressway, an interstate highway that connects Butterworth with Kulim in Kedah. Apart from that, in order to reduce traffic congestion on the North – South Expressway that is located east of Butterworth, Butterworth Outer Ring Road (BORR) is a roadway that was completed in 2005.

Despite being a famous back in the 19th century, Butterworth still has its charm. There are many places that one can visit to learn and appreciate the history of Butterworth. Two of the most noteworthy spots in Butterworth are The Sree Maha Mariamman Devasthanam Temple and The Tow Boo Kong Temple. The Sree Maha Mariamman Devasthanam Temple is the oldest Hindu temple in Butterworth and was founded in 1853. The Tow Boo Kong Temple is a Taoist temple that was built in stages between 1970s and 2009. These two spots are a must visit for those who know how to appreciate culture and the architectural beauty of these age old buildings.

Albeit being more of a transportation hub that a tourist attraction, Butterworth is still a place filled with wonders. Tourists can still enjoy the variety of cuisines made available for them to enjoy. For those who enjoy cooking their own meal, there are grocery stores in the area that they can frequent to obtain their produce from. For those who enjoy shopping or just malls in general can visit Sunway Carnival Mall as it is one of the popular malls in Butterworth. Butterworth does not lack medical attention either as there are hospitals in the surrounding area such Hospital Seberang Jaya, Bagan Specialist Centre and Tan Clinic are some of the hospitals that one can go to in time of emergency.
