Georgetown, located in Penang, is not just a major city but is considered the entire state’s capital, not just Penang Island’s. Being a metropolis, the area has no problem when it comes to transit efficiency. The Kelutong Expressway and the Penang Bridge are the main roads used to lead residents in and out, mainly to other bustling areas like Bayan Lepas and Gelugor. The North South Expressway in turn, leads drivers from the area to greater parts of Malaysia. It also has ferry service at its station Weld Quay and unlike many ferries; cars and motorcycles go along for the ride as well as one can drive their vehicles inside the boat. Rapid Penang service is available, naturally.
Inside, a multitude of amenities and attractions await. So much so that it has been named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, encompassing much of Malaysia’s joint history and culture within its architectural construction. Another place to be given the honour is Melaka. Among the many mansions, forts and temples, a few certainly stand out as highlights that serve dual purposes; being tourist favourites and educational/ religious refuge for its residents. They are the Penang State and Islamic Museums, St. George’s Church, Kapitan Keling Mosque, Kuan Yin Teng Temple and Dhammikarama Burmese Buddhist Temple. Komtar Shopping Complex provides the retail options.
