Tanjung Tokong

Tanjung Tokong started off as a fishing village up until the 1970s and after that, rapid urbanisation followed. Today, Tanjung Tokong is a suburban town located in George Town of the Penang Island. Tanjung Tokong is located along the north eastern coast of the Penang Island. It is next to Pulau Tikus and about 4 kilometres northwest of the city centre. Tanjung Tokong is now an upper class residential suburb with high-rise buildings such as the vibrant Straits Quay lining the coast.

The main road within Tanjung Tokong is Tanjung Tokong Road and it stretches from Pulau Tikus and continues as Tanjung Bungah Road. Tanjung Tokong Road is also part of Federal Route 6, making it highly accessible but prone to traffic congestion. Residents of Tanjung Tokong can take Vale of Tempe Road which connects to Mount Erskine Road to avoid traffic jam. For those who use public transport, there are also Rapid Penang buses that connect Tanjung Tokong to George Town and other places in Penang like Tanjung Bungah, Batu Ferringhi and Queensbay Mall.

There is a total of 3 primary schools located within Tanjung Tokong, making the suburb suitable for growing families to live in and those schools include Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Tanjong Tokong, Sekolah Rendah Jenis Kebangsaan (C) Hun Bin, Sekolah Rendsah Jenis Kebangsaan (C) Phor Tay. Sekolah Menengah Tanjong Bunga is one of the secondary schools located in Tanjung Tokong. In addition, there are also international schools in the area and those international schools include Pelita International School, Tenby Schools Penang as well as Dalat International School.

There are also a few supermarkets located in Tanjung Tokong for the convenience of purchasing basic daily necessities and those supermarkets include Cold Storage Island Plaza and Tesco Seri Tanjung Pinang. For dining, there is a wide range of restaurants within Straits Quay that are suitable for both the day time and night time. There is Blue Reef Fish & Chips for those who enjoy seafood, Healy Mac’s Irish Bar & Restaurant for people to grab a drink at night, Nyonya Breeze Desire for a taste of oriental nyonya food and many more. Apart from Straits Quay, there is also Island Plaza and adjacent to Island Plaza is Precinct 10, a food and beverages complex. These places contribute to make Tanjung Tokong a vibrant suburb, suitable for people of all ages as there is an ample amount of available amenities during the day time and a busy night life for the youths.
