Bagan Serai is a small town in Perak, Malaysia. It is located in Kerian district and is an important collecting and processing location for the paddy plantation of the Kerian scheme. Bagan Serai is also the name of the parliamentary constituency in which the town is located. The word “Bagan” in malay means a jetty or a place of landing for some business activities. While the word “Serai” means Cymbopogon a herb often used in Malay food. (“Serai” used to be mass produced in this small town.) When linking the two words, it becomes “Bagan Serai”. Through the hearsay from old generations, Bagan Serai used to be a very busy pier for trading activities, because of the rivers that flows through this small town straight to the sea, making it a strategic location for trading activities and suitable landing spot for goods. Being so close to the sea makes Bagan Serai a relatively colder town than other parts of Malaysia. In this town, there are varieties of hawker stalls and restaurants and supermarkets. There are also a number of education facilities, hospitals and historical buildings available in this town. To get around in this small town it is either to take a bus or a taxi to be able to move around in or out of the town. The town’s main bus stand is located at the New Town of Bagan Serai and close to Main Market of Bagan Serai which also provides taxi services.
