Kangar

Kangar is the capital of Perlis, on the northernmost point of Peninsula Malaysia, between Alor Setar and the Thai Border of Padang Besar.  Kangar’s town centre is in the Sena district, which is also known as “Uptown Sena”. It is the state administrative centre and serves as its major trading hub. The town is the smallest state capital in Malaysia and most of its inhabitants are farmers and civil servants.

Kangar is easily accessible by road and rail from neighbouring states throughout the country, connected via the North-South Expressway. The ETS train runs through Kangar and Arau and is a 4.5 hours journey from Kuala Lumpur while it takes approximately an hour from Alor Setar, Penang, Padang, and Hadyai from neighbouring Arau. Other options include taxis and express buses and traditional rail service on the Express Senandung Langkawi service from Kuala Lumpur. The nearest railway station is at Arau.

Although it is the state capital it, unfortunately, does not have the vibrancy and fast-paced lifestyle associated with the state capital. Kangar has a countryside feel offering a slow-paced laid-back lifestyle surrounded by ample fields and farms.

As mentioned above, most of its inhabitants are farmers and civil servants. Needless to say, farming or agriculture is their main economic activity. Aside from that, tourism also contributes to the economy as the town offers plenty of natural attractions. Therefore, it offers ample business, investment, and job opportunities in the above-mentioned industries. Kangar is known for the production of the popular Harum Manis Mangoes and is home to the country’s largest sugar cane plantation, the Ladang Tebu Chuping.

Although it is a small town, there are a lot of schools located in and around Kangar such as Derma English School, SMK Perlis, SRK Stella Maris, and Sekolah Kebangsaan Teknik Kangar. For daily essentials and groceries, there are K-Ceria Hypermarket,Supermarket Ten Ten, and Giant Superstore Kangar alongside a number of mini-markets and convenience stores. Besides that, the Store departmental store offers a wide range of products.

Hospital Tuanku Fauziah is the main hospital while KPJ Perlis Specialist Hospital is the only private hospital that serves the medical needs of the community at large alongside medical clinics like Annura Clinic, Chan Clinic, and Klinik Bakti as well as the Kangar community clinic.

Kangar offers a variety of nature-related recreational activities amongst them, the beautiful Taman Rekreasi Tasik Melati, Wang Kelian State Park,Perlis State Park, Perlis Snake, and Reptile Park as well as the 12 acres Herbal Park while those into golfing can play around of golf at the Kelab Golf Putra.

Since Kangar town isn’t exactly that big, looking for food is a breeze as there is plenty of choices available from local street food to restaurants and cafes that serve a variety of cuisines such as Medan Selera Kuala Perlis,Bendang Coffee House, Restoran Andaman 2,Bomaq Café and Restoran D’Kontena.

Masjid Alwi Kangar, Masjid Negeri Perlis Arau and Tokong Poh Aun Keong are among the places of worship available.
