Questions to Ask before Renting
After settling on a place to rent, there are some questions you’ll have to ask your potential landlord before you sign on the dotted line.
Below is a list of the more important ones;
  1. 1. Safety: Depending on the area you may be living in, safety can be a small issue or a big one. Check with your landlord on crime rates, research on the internet and if possible, speak to people living in the area.
  1. 2. Public transportation: Find out if there are buses near your rental apartment and if the services go to destinations you frequent. Check if there is a nearby train station and if it’s within walking distance or a short bus ride away.
  1. 3. Pipes: Make sure that the water pipes are in working condition and that there are no leaks. Find out when the last time they were serviced. If the last service date was over a year ago, negotiate to get the landlord to have them checked and fixed before you sign the lease.
  1. 4. Air-conditioner/appliances: Check and get the landlord to verify that all are in good working condition. If they are not, negotiate to have them repaired, replaced or removed.
  1. 5. Water & electricity bill: Check if this is separate or included in the rent. Try to negotiate it into the rent if possible.
In addition to these questions, do ask the landlord what the procedure is like if something in the house/apartment is broken. Clarify the procedures clearly and have it in writing.
Always put every agreement in writing to protect yourself.
