Shah Alam started out as Sungai Renggam and was known for its rubber and oil palm plantations. It is now the Selangor state capital. Shah Alam is next to the Klang District of Selangor and it has since been granted the status of city in 2000. In addition to this, Shah Alam has several places of interest such as the famous Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Mosque, also known as the Blue Mosque which is said to be the largest mosque in Malaysia. Completed in 1988, this mosque can hold up to 24,000 worshippers at one time. The Blue Mosque overlooks the Garden of Islamic Arts which features paintings, sculptures, calligraphy and architecture. The Selangor State Museum is also located in Shah Alam.
