Sarawak is the largest state in Malaysia. It is one of the two Malaysian states situated on the island of Borneo. Located on the northwest of this island, Sarawak borders Sabah to the northeast, Indonesia to the south and it surrounds the country of Brunei. The state’s capital is Kuching.
Known as ‘Land of the Hornbills’, Sarawak is famous for these beautiful birds and other wildlife. This state is home to the longest river in Malaysia, Rajang River. There are more than 40 sub-ethnic groups, each with their own dialects and traditions. Popular traditional festivals celebrated in Sarawak include gawai dayak, gawai kenyalang, kaul festival and many more. This state is also famous for its longhouses. Sape, ngajat, datun julud and bamboo dance are some of the traditional dance and music of Sarawak. Popular local food includes Sarawak laksa, kolo mee, ayam pansuh and midin belacan.
