Several islands including Pulau Perhentian, Pulau Kapas and Pulau Redang, are also part of the state. Kuala Terengganu, a coastal city, is the state’s capital and also royal capital.

The state has prospered from the discovery of oil and gas off its coast. The other two major industries contributing to the state’s wealth are fishing and tourism. Agriculture producing various fruits and vegetables remains important. In addition to the islands, other popular tourist destinations include Tasik Kenyir, Kuala Ibai lagoons, Batu Barok and Rantau Abang beaches.
