Cheras is a municipality that lies in the middle of two major areas in the Klang Valley, Ampang and Kajang, and is split into two localities with its minority nestled in Selangor, and the rest spread throughout Wilayah Persekutuan. The locale has evolved from a 21 shop-house town centre into a suburb that currently houses over a hundred residential estates, established approximately 60 years ago.

Cheras has undergone extensive growth and transformation with the opening of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line 1, on 17 July 2017. The existing public transport options in the Cheras vicinity such as taxis, buses, Light Rapid Transit (LRT) and ride-hailing services, has boosted the development of Cheras, alongside 11 of the 31 new MRT stations situated within the district.
The new MRT line runs along Jalan Cheras in Kuala Lumpur, down the Cheras-Kajang expressway in Selangor, from Cochrane station to the Taman Koperasi Cuepacs station. Thus the benefit of exploring this area is that visitors will be able to avoid getting stuck in traffic congestion which Cheras is known for, by simply opting to utilise the MRT service. Further encouraging the use of the MRT service in Cheras, are the many MRT feeder busses to close the gaps between areas.

The importance of Cheras as an education hub has also led to the inclusion of two MRT stations near the UCSI University in Cheras, namely the Taman Connaught and Taman Mutiara MRT stations. And helping students connect to and from UCSI are free shuttle services that operate between 6.40am and 8.20pm on weekdays and 7.20pm till 1.20pm on Saturday from the South Wing (UCSI University KL) of the campus. This shuttle service route plies between the South Wing and North Wing (UCSI College) as well as to the Bandar Tasik Selatan transport hub.
Not one but two popular retail offerings in Cheras (IKEA Cheras and MyTOWN Shopping Centre) are also connected to the MRT Line 1, via a direct underground link access appended to the Cochrane MRT station. The option of frequenting a mall via MRT assures shoppers hassle free transportation, as well as a time saving option as they will not only get to skip the traffic, but also the search of a parking space.
Travellers who however prefer to use their own private vehicles, will be well connected via major highways. Their current option of highways to travel to and from Cheras includes the Salak South Highway, Grand Saga Expressway, Sungai Besi Highway, and the Cheras Highway.
