Gelugor

Gelugor is a strategically located township on the island of Penang, conveniently situated beside the iconic Penang Bridge. Urban development in the area began in the 1960s, with growth accelerating following the completion of Penang Bridge in 1985. Today, the neighbourhood has grown to be a popular suburb of Penang’s capital, George Town.

Bukit Gelugor is an area that appeals to buyers looking for Penang property for sale which balances connectivity and affordability. The township’s strategic location lies halfway between George Town in the north and Bayan Lepas to the south, with the Penang Bridge providing convenient links to the mainland and nearby Butterworth.

The township is named after a local plant species, a reference to the rural origins of the area. That history can still be seen in the many parks and green spaces dotted around the township, as well as on the lush green slopes and hiking trails of Bukit Kukus Summit which overlooks the town. Residents looking to access a more manicured outdoor experience can enjoy the popular Raffel Park, a beautiful multi-use space that includes a basketball court and playground for kids. Gelugor is also home to the Youth and Sports Complex Penang, boasting a large number of exciting sporting activities such as tennis, badminton, basketball, and even rock climbing.

Udini Square Mall is the neighbourhood shopping centre at the heart of Gelugor’s retail experience. This three-storey mall boasts over 100 retail outlets as well as a variety of food and beverage outlets for locals to enjoy. Nearby e-Gate offers an alternative location, with additional food and beverage options alongside a limited number of retail outlets. Ambitious mixed-use development The Light City is set to expand the local lifestyle offerings, with completion of this multiuse smart city complex and retail mail due by 2021. Nearby Queensbay Mall is another popular option just ten minutes’ drive south, offering 5 floors of retail and F&B outlets, with an integrated entertainment zone that boasts a cinema amongst its offerings.

The Tesco Hypermarket linked to Udini Square offers the township’s major supermarket option, providing convenient grocery shopping for residents of the neighbourhood with a wide range of local and international products. Various mini-markets and local food stores provide alternative options throughout the suburb, and a busy Wednesday nightmarket at Jalan Pantai Jerjak provides a popular choice for further shopping.

Gelugor is home to a number of local public schools following the national curriculum in both primary and secondary education. Popular private and international schools are also located within easy travelling distance of the area, with Fairview International School, Straits International School, and Wesley Methodist School Penang to name a few located within roughly 20 minutes’ drive.

The connectivity which Gelugor enjoys is certainly one of its most important selling points when it comes to homebuyers considering the area. While Penang Bridge has been supplemented by the more contemporary Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge, it still provides an extremely popular and convenient link to the mainland, and easy travel to nearby Butterworth. Convenient access to the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway offers simple travel along this coastal highway to the thriving capital of George Town, while the Gelugor Highway of Route 6 enables direct travel to Bayan Lepas via Bayan Baru.

Public transport on Penang is primarily based around the Rapid Penang Bus services, and with its strategic location, Gelugor is well served by a number of popular routes. Easy access across the Penang Bridge also provides residents of Gelugor with good connectivity to KTM Butterworth, with rail services direct to Kuala Lumpur and connections beyond.
