Shah Alam is a quiet city that comprises primarily of residential developments, similar to Subang and Petaling Jaya. Located in this city is the township of Kota Kemuning on the southeast side, which was once considered to be located in the outskirts – but with the number of available access roads now, Kota Kemuning is now considered to be a selection of highly sought after high-end properties. Located on the northwest end of Shah Alam is the other equally prestigious township of Setia Alam.

The lifestyle in Shah Alam is considered to be on the quieter and more peaceful side, especially with its lack of entertainment. Considered to be the more popular shopping mall in Shah Alam is the SACC Mall which comes to live at night.

The newer shopping mall to the city on the southeast end is Gamuda Walk, a neighbourhood mall which its supermarket is Aeon Max Value. Gamuda Walk is one of the most popular mall in the area now, for the boutiques and franchises it offers. On the other end of Shah Alam within Setia Alam is the Setia City Mall, which is popular as a weekend hangout place and for its attached convention centre.
Coming up in the neighbouring areas are several more new townships, such as Bandar Rimbayu, Ecoworld Sanctuary, Tropicana Aman and the upcoming TwentyFive.7 by Gamuda Land. With the nature of Shah Alam being a quiet and reserved city, all the developments boast of serenity, peace and nature.
Residents of Shah Alam enjoy the benefit of many recreational activities. The Bukit Cerakah Forest Reserve which is otherwise known as Bukit Cahaya Sri Alam is a place for locals to hike at, or for action seekers, there is the Shah Alam Extreme Park and the Go-Kart Circuit. Shah Alam is also famous for its stadiums. The medical facilities available in Shah Alam include the Columbia Asia Hospital, Shah Alam Hospital and Darul Ehsan Medical Centre. For those who desire more specialised medical services, there is the Subang Jaya Medical Centre (SJMC) in Subang, and the Ara Damansara Medical Centre which is otherwise known as Ramsay Sime Darby in Ara Damansara.
