Petaling Jaya has grown from its days of being a suburban satellite town adjacent to Kuala Lumpur , only acquiring its city status in June 2006. As Kuala Lumpur expanded rapidly into one of the major commercial cities in Malaysia, workers and families needed to be housed nearby to their workplace, which spill over from adjacent areas like Taman Tun Dr Ismail , Bukit Damansara, Bukit Tungku , Kuchai Lama , Sentul , Seputeh , Taman Desa , and thus Petaling Jaya was gazette as a planned nearby suburban township, with numerous gardens, occupying an area of 97.2 square kilometers. Thus “PJ” grew with many single storey, double storey, and plots of lands with commercial shop areas, green lung gardens and interlinking roads and highways, making it a haven for families and working class to live, work and play.
Petaling Jaya is conveniently served by many highways to parts of metropolis Kuala Lumpur, such as the North-South Expressway (E1) which connects Petaling Jaya to all the states on the North and the South ends of Malaysia. There is also the Federal Highway (Route 15) to Seputeh and Subang , and the Sprint Expressway(E23) to Dutamas , New Pantai Expressway(E10) to Kerinchi , and the Kepong-Selayang Highway (B21) to Selayang . Not forgetting major roads in Petaling Jaya itself, such as the Lebuhraya Damansara Puchong (LDP) to connect to Puchong , and Old Klang Road.
Since Petaling Jaya is a planned township, hence it is important that included in the town planning are areas to rest and relax after a hard day’s work. There are also many pockets of greenery, such as gardens, parks, lakes, and recreational areas, for one to spend time with family and relatives. Popular outdoor recreational areas include the Tropicana Park, Bandar Utama Park, Taman Jaya, Kelana Jaya lake, and Taman Rimba Riang. Thanks to the many Dewan Majlis (Community Halls) friends and family can enjoy sports activities indoors such as basketball, badminton, futsal and sepak takraw.
In order to sustain the essential activity of eating, there are definitely a wide variety of shopping and dining for the family and working adults in Petaling Jaya. More upmarket shopping places include Jaya Grocer, Village Grocer, Giant and Tesco.
Petaling Jaya being a massive suburban area, has many restaurants and stores within nearby housing estates. From lower budget restaurants catering for mixed rice to office workers, to the high-end eateries and restaurants found in malls within Petaling Jaya itself. Nearby upmarket malls include AEON Mall in Puchong and 1 Utama, The Curve in Mutiara Damansara, Paradigm Mall, and Sunway Pyramid.
There is no lack of educational national schools within Petaling Jaya that a family can easily send their children to. These also include vernacular Chinese, Malay and Tamil schools. Plenty of international schools nearby include Sunway College, Sunway International School, HELP International School, LimKokWing, and Sri Emas International School.
For the last two decades, there has been more and development of Petaling Jaya, in terms of office and commercial development, thanks to the explosion of population, demand and fulfillment of transportation such as trains and LRT and MRT, and the development of mega malls, which many tourists and locals from all over Malaysia flock to especially during holidays and weekends. With the introduction of commercial areas of the Wawasan 2020 such as the Multimedia Super Corridor and IT and communications related projects, many local and foreign investments and job opportunities have come into Petaling Jaya, especially with property developers such as SP Setia , Gamuda and Glomac building both retail and housing and infrastructure to support this growth.
Residential properties in Petaling Jaya are a mix of both leasehold and freehold . As more housing is required in Petaling Jaya to support its growth in Malaysia, this explains the median price psf of MYR 497, and a median price of MYR 700,000. Therefore, the price in this area is expected to rise and be more valuable to investors and homeowners alike.
