PENANG, 1 December 2025 — Eastern & Oriental Berhad (E&O), Malaysia’s distinguished developer celebrated for its timeless craftsmanship and iconic waterfront destinations, proudly welcomes the Penang International Dragon Boat Regatta (PIDBR) 2025 back to Straits Quay Retail Marina from 28 to 30 November. Now entering its second consecutive year at this vibrant seafront enclave, the regatta once again sets Penang’s coastline abuzz as teams from around the world gather at one of the island’s most recognisable waterfront settings.
Rooted in one of Asia’s longest-standing paddling traditions, PIDBR 2025 further cemented Penang’s maritime legacy while elevating its reputation as a global sporting destination. Last year’s edition welcomed over 1,600 athletes from 12 countries, an impressive benchmark that was surpassed this year with the introduction of a new para-athlete category featuring three participating groups. Spectator and participant turnout experienced strong year-on-year growth from last year’s 100,000, demonstrating an even broader and more diverse international presence.
This year’s edition features an exciting line-up of 250m and 400m races, complemented by special categories that champion inclusivity through para-athlete participation, junior and senior divisions, as well as international open teams. Together, the pounding drums, gliding paddles and spirited competition create an atmosphere where global camaraderie and cultural festivity take centre stage.
“The spirit of dragon boating, teamwork, discipline and unity, mirrors the values we uphold as we shape Penang’s future. With Straits Quay and Andaman Island growing side by side, we are proud to support a festival that not only energises our waterfront but strengthens Penang’s standing as a premier destination for sport, culture and community,” said Dato’ Seri Tee Eng Ho, Executive Chairman of Eastern & Oriental Berhad.
E&O’s role as host venue partner shows its commitment to elevating Penang’s tourism and international visibility. Straits Quay Marina, with its deep-water berths, panoramic sea views and vibrant retail promenade, offers an unparalleled waterfront setting that enhances the regatta experience for both participants and spectators. Its location within the Seri Tanjung Pinang masterplan reflects E&O’s long-standing investment in Penang’s northern coast and its continuous efforts to build destinations that foster community engagement, healthy living and cultural celebration.
The event also coincided with one of the most energetic stretches of Penang’s tourism calendar. With more than 720,000 tourist arrivals recorded in November and December 2024 — and even higher figures anticipated this year — PIDBR 2025 rode that wave of momentum, offering year-end travellers a signature waterfront spectacle at the height of the island’s festive season. It was an especially vibrant month for E&O, with Straits Quay alive with Christmas programming while preparations were underway for two major happenings on 12 December, the opening of the long awaited Gurney Bridge and Andaman’s festive flea-market-style celebration, set to bring together artisanal vendors, community stalls and seasonal cheer for holidaymakers and residents alike.
At Straits Quay Retail Marina, the regatta became part of a larger celebration as waterfront Christmas attractions, family-friendly amusement rides and seasonal performances transformed the marina into a lively holiday playground. Visitors were treated to a festive promenade where the pulse of dragon boat racing met the easygoing charm of a seaside escape, showcasing a uniquely Penang blend of sport, culture and year-end celebration.
E&O’s involvement in PIDBR is anchored by its Legacy for Tomorrow sustainability framework, which continues to guide the Group’s long-term commitment to environmental stewardship, community resilience and responsible growth. With more than six decades of remarkable contributions spanning community programmes, sports initiatives and coastal enhancements, E&O remains steadfast in uplifting Penang’s social and ecological landscape, from safeguarding its shorelines to fostering inclusive initiatives that strengthen the community’s shared future.
