Since 2009, PropertyGuru Group has conducted a biannual survey among property seekers in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia. The main objective of the study is to measure property sentiments and expectations around the property market to help consumers, property agents and developers gain a better perspective of the local market.
For the latest survey edition of H2 2023, in Malaysia, we polled 1,000 respondents via an online questionnaire released between 9th June and 26th June 2023.
The respondents comprise a mix of white-collar professional workers, businessmen and more in the following income brackets: low-income (34%), middle-income (34%) and high-income (25%). The age groups of the respondents were divided into five categories: 22-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60 years old & above.
Malaysia property seekers are in a challenging position as we navigate OPR hikes post-pandemic, affordability issues and climate change challenges.
This is the key highlight of the study which we believe reflects current property seekers’ sentiments.
Affordability continues to be a challenge for most Malaysians, coupled with sustainability issues, this is an emerging trend in homeownership as climate change has become a major liveability force. As Malaysians adapt to the increase in property purchasing costs, the rental market needs more attention from all property stakeholders to ensure a dignified living environment for renters.
The insights gathered from our study shed light on the dynamic landscape of property consumer sentiments in Malaysia, reflecting a blend of economic, environmental, and social factors that shape buying intentions and preferences.
As the market evolves, understanding these sentiments will be crucial for stakeholders in the real estate industry to adapt and cater to potential buyers’ changing needs and priorities.
