Balakong is a large township located in Selangor. It neighbours Sri Petaling,Seri Kembangan, Kajang and Serdang. It is also known as Cheras South. It is also near to Sg Besi and a short 20 minutes’ drive from the city centre on smooth traffic. Balakong is near to Selangor Turf Club and Mines Wellness City.
Once a sleepy village, it is today, a thriving residential neighbourhood popular with young adults and families.
Balakong is accessible via SILK Highway, Sg Besi Expressway and North South Expressway. It is also accessible through Jalan Cheras. Alternatively its can be accessed by buses, the Batu 11 Station (Balakong station) on the MRT and taxis or e-hailing services.
Balakong is a very big area comprising residential and industrial component. The Cheras South component mainly comprises residential estates while the Seri Kembangan side of Balakong is mainly a light industrial area for the footwear, food packaging, printing and automobile services. Meanwhile, the New Chinese Village is a remnant of its past.
As an established township, it offers a host of amenities and facilities such as schools, banks, eateries, retail outlets and more, for the needs of its community.
The nearest public schools in Balakong include SJKC Balakong, SK Tmn Sg Besi Indah and Sekolah Rendah Islam Al Hidayah. In addition, Cempaka School is a private school offering the National Syllabus and its perhaps an established private school known in the Cheras area. Within vicinity of Balakong are also some private and international schools like the well-known Australian International School, Alice Smith School – Secondary Campus, Hua Xia International School,Beaconhouse Newlands International School and Kingsgate International School. There are several other schools in surrounding neighbourhoods such as Eaton International School @ Jade Hills and Tanarata International School in nearby neighbourhood of Kajang. Meanwhile, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and UTAR are short drives away.
For medical emergencies, there are several medical centres surrounding Balakong, the nearest being Columbia Asia Hospital Cheras and Pantai Hospital Cheras. Of course, there are many clinics and dental clinics within vicinity for minor medical treatment. Other alternative include Serdang Hospital, Kajang Hospital and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre, all of which are within a 10km radius.
Within Balakong there are several supermarkets, mini-markets and convenience store serving the community’s essential and groceries needs, such as Econsave in Batu 11, Mymydin,New Jaya Supermarket,Segi Fresh Balakong and BIG Supermart Sdn Bhd. Meanwhile, popular shopping malls available include AEON Mall Cheras Selatan, Amerin Mall and The Mines Shopping Mall, all of which offers a wide range of retail outlets, eateries, entertainment and services.
Being an established neighbourhood, there are plenty of eateries available here. The choices are endless, from yummy street food to high-end restaurants serving a wide range of cuisine to suit every palate. Amongst them are ABC Food Corner, Restoran Chun Yi, ZW Tasty Restaurant, Kopi & Kesum and Le Gardenz Café. In addition, there are more f & b options at the rather new Cheras Traders’ Square and C180 commercial area nearby.
Balakong is surrounded by abundant nature and has a good number of recreational amenities around its many neighbourhoods such as Taman Muhibbah Recreation Park, Bukit Jalil Recreation Park, MAEPS Equestrian Centre, MAEPS Lake and Taman Konservatori UPM. There are also several golf courses within vicinity such as The Mines Resort & Golf Club, Bukit Jalil Golf and Country Club and UniPutra Golf Club amongst others. Other recreational amenities include cinemas, karaoke and many more to keep the families occupied.
Properties in Balakong area mostly freehold. Generally, properties are within affordable range with a median price psf of RM 281 or median price of RM 235,000, according to transaction record from March 2019 to January 2020. Some projects around the area to look at include Symphony Tower Balakong, Amerin Residence, Silk Residence, Silk Sky and Venture Heights.
