Hidden deep in the heart of Subang, Upstairs Café possibly got their name from being located on the first floor of a shop lot complex. Upstairs Café overlooks the streets, allowing patrons to enjoy the views whilst enjoying their meal. Cool jazz music plays in the background of the café, which is fitted with an al-fresco dining area to add uniqueness in the settings. A team of baristas and in-house bakers cater to the customers, serving fresh daily goodies for patrons to enjoy. The café is famous for their red velvet cake, and other in-house delicacies. There is a long list of breakfast meals to choose from, ranging from pancakes to poached eggs on bacon.

As the name states, Good Friends does portray a welcoming and friendly feeling as you step inside. The interior is nice and cozy with modest interiors and soothing music to set the vibe. The extensive breakfast menu ranges from local cuisines all the way to modern western delicacies. One of the most popular dishes here includes the Premium Good Nasi with grilled chicken, which is something like the famous ‘nasi lemak’ only without the coconut rice. This café sets a statement towards other cafés in terms of interior design, with its state-of-the-art furniture complemented with tailored-made structures created by renowned architects. Jibby & Co is unquestionably an instagrammable venue, as every square foot of the place has something interesting to photograph. Meteora is one of those café’s where you can make yourself feel at home as the café is fitted with random decor to create the illusion of everyone’s living room. Other than that, the ceiling is crowded with warm downlights to set the mood. The café sets itself to constantly create innovative brunch menus by infusing cuisines from all over the world. Take their brunch burgers which has an Indian Tandoori chicken slider topped with mint sauce. Besides that, they come up with fantastic cakes including their signature Cheese Cake Quenelles served in a glass. The best way to compliment it is with their fresh coffee made to order. They also have playing cards for your buddies and you to bond over with, instead of being anti-social on mobile phones.

Hidden in an industrial area in Subang, Grey Sky Morning is one of three ventures at EX8, Subang. The café might be hard to spot but it’s definitely worth the discovery. As soon as you step in, you will be amazed by the modern yet minimalistic interiors that surround the premises. Dressed in grey paint and fitted with dark furniture, it is undoubtedly the place to be if you are in the mood for some urban ambience. Well known for being one of the most beautiful coffee places in Malaysia, Grey Sky Morning strives to provide second-to-none service to their patrons. This café serves a range of handmade cakes including their bestselling walnut chocolate chip cake that is best paired with a cup of freshly brewed milk coffee. Bring your friends to Grey Sky Morning and have a chill time!

3. Softcore

Softcore is acclaimed to be one of Subang Jaya’s brightest, most cheerful and exciting brunch spots. Softcore delivers what its name suggests: soft homemade lava cakes with molten centres. Managed by a team of young and energetic individuals, this café succeeds in providing tasty goodies to their patrons. It’s impossible not to get your hands on some artistically presented lava cakes. On the other hand, Softcore also serves a bunch of other enjoyable savouries such as the grilled cheese sandwich served with salad and fries. Tucked away in the corners of SS15 is a dashing café with colourful settings. Their concept of style is simple and basic. They use wooden pallets to create seats and oil barrels as small tables. The concept for their food is also unique. For instance, try out their Belgium Waffle with Scrambled Eggs and Sausage or the Honey and Ice Cream Shibuya Toast. For heavy eaters, the simple and hearty Alchemist Big Breakfast must be your top priority. Cool down with a glass of non-alcoholic Mango Tango Mojito served in a cool DIY glass. 5. Whup Whup Café

What used to be an industrial yam factory is now home to one of Subang Jaya’s biggest cafe! Whup Whup café maintains the industrial theme but with an added touch of wood and brick to keep it classy. The café also decided to maintain some historic pieces left from the old factory to use as décor. As for brunch foods, try out their popular ‘Lil Miss Nibbles’, which isn’t as small as its name. It is a salmon fillet with scrambled eggs, sautéed mushrooms, and grilled tomatoes. In addition, take a bite of their rustic toast with coffee-infused carrot butter spread which happens to be the restaurant’s interpretation of a healthy meal. Don’t forget to grab a cup of their freshly-brewed coffee whilst you’re at it!

Lunch

When we think about Warongs, we normally think about the usual nasi goreng, nasi lemak and other traditional dishes. Despite that, Warong Cikgu is well-known all around Subang Jaya for their signature ‘Nasi Mmanggey’ which is commonly known as ‘Nasi Kukus Ayam Berempah’. Another hot seller is the ‘Nasi Kak Wok’ which originates from Kelantan. The shop is not fancy, as the food here is the main hype.

If you’re a fan of spice, Warong Cikgu will delight your taste buds with their hot sambal sauce. The best way to cool down all that spice is with a glass of their fresh coconut shake. Fresh coconut juice is also available, served in a metal bucket. For a sweet ending, order the ABC Oreo which is a generous bowl of shaved ice, syrup, and Oreo toppings for an affordable price of only RM4.

Cars kitchen is a casual restaurant located beside a European Cars Workshop and owned by the same person. Patrons who wash or repair their cars can enjoy a meal whilst waiting. Cars Kitchen Subang serves many local ‘nasi campur’ varieties during the day, and after 8pm they serve Western and Malaysian fusion dishes. One of their bestselling dishes is their ‘Currynara’, which sounds is similar to the Italian Carbonara but with curry sauce. They also serve delicious lobsters, steaks, and burgers all at an affordable price. On top of all the scrumptious foods they serve, Cars Kitchen also has a long list of refreshing beverages. If you’re a car enthusiast looking for a place to eat and hang out, Cars Kitchen is the place to be!

3. Super Kitchen Chilli Pan Mee

When you think about pan mee, Super Kitchen Chilli Pan Mee has it all! From dry pan mee, loh pan mee, curry pan mee to stir fried pan mee, and their famous chilli pan mee. This restaurant selling noodles has been innovative enough over the years to create more pan mee varieties, which the selection just keeps growing. My Burger Lab is a restaurant with crazy and unique burger creations which never fails to excite their patrons. Located in Bandar Sunway, My Burger Lab is a humble, low-key restaurant which serves only the best burgers in the area. Some of their crazy creations include the ‘Ultraman 3.0 Burger’ (a crispy chicken thigh smothered in salted egg sauce), or the ‘Tofu Swisstake Burger’ (a vegetarian version packed with sautéed shitake, enoki mushrooms and swiss cheese) or the ‘Animal Burger’ (a mustard-grilled beef patty with secret sauce). Besides burgers, they also serve salads, their popular choice is the ‘Magikarp Salad’ which comes with mixed vegetables, smoked salmon, charcoal croutons, and Tomago egg. Gold Chilli Restaurant is always packed with patrons coming from all walks of life. During peak hours, there might even be a long queue of patrons waiting to get a seat. The majority of the people who visit this restaurant usually order the same thing – acclaimed to be one of the best dishes in SS15, the Gold Chilli Butter Chicken set. With a price tag of only RM11.50, you will be served a plate of creamy boneless butter chicken, rice, and tea. They also serve prawn, squid, and beef if you’re not a fan of chicken. Besides that, they also serve many other dishes in case you get bored of butter chicken (which you probably won’t). Wait no more and join the butter chicken movement at Gold Chilli!

Dinner

Ore9i, or commonly called Oregi, is a chill out spot in the centre of SS15 which is always packed at night. Students normally fill the place and hang out till the wee hours of the morning, smoking shisha pipes that are sold at the restaurant. There are also indoor seating spaces, so you won’t have to worry about the shisha smoke outside. The food served is a fusion of Arabic and Western dishes, such as hummus served with Arabic bread and olive oil, or the ‘Shishtawook’ which is a juicy barbecued chicken served with bread. For something heavier, try out the array of Arabic rice dishes such as the Haneeth, Madggot, Mandy and Kabsa served with either lamb or chicken, garnished with a side of salad. For a more western dish, try out the mushroom sauce spaghetti or the Beef Ball Pomodoro. Flush down all the food with a glass of in-house mint lemonade infused with mint leaves. Oregi has a youthful atmosphere that always keeps the restaurant lively!

Tryst, which has been operating for many years in SS15 is an interesting café that dons a rustic design which screams a youthful and funky vibe. It certainly attracts the attention of students nearby, as the place is welcoming and the menus won’t put a dent in your pocket. The premise has a halal bar section on the ground floor section with an open-air concept at the second floor, making it the perfect spot for shisha lovers. Besides that, they also have choices of group games such as Jenga and playing cards. As for food, you can expect many variations from sweet desserts all the way to indomee. A perfect hang out destination for you and your friends!

3. Jibril

You would only know about Jibril from friends or anyone around SS15 as the restaurant is hidden behind a secret door at Sangkaya Coconut Ice Cream. As you step in, you will experience the feeling of a classic bar, dim lighting with soft jazz music playing in the background. In addition, everything including the bar drinks are halal! There are two floors in total which is connected by a small spiral staircase. Some of the best beverages include the ‘Potter’, ’Monroe’, ‘Lisa’, and ‘Bond’. For meal selections, hands down the most popular dish is the Salted Egg Butter Chicken Rice. So, if you ever feel like hanging out in a hidden non-alcoholic bar, then Jibril at SS15 is the place to be!

4. Mozer’s

With their second branch opened in Subang Parade, Mozer’s is the place to be for a nice family dinner. They serve original Arabic culture foods such as Arabic rice and shish kebabs. It has been rumoured that if you don’t use your phone whilst having dinner you will be treated with a portion of fresh churros with caramel and chocolate sauce. The interior is very welcoming and comfortable, akin to a typical highly decorated living room. The restaurant is always packed during dinner time. Not only does the food pack a punch with generous portions and mouth-watering flavours, but it’s also quite affordable! Take your family and friends out for a treat at Mozer’s!

5. The Social at Empire Shopping Gallery

The Social is a good hang out spot for friends and colleagues, as it is not just a lively restaurant but also has a bar with live music. The restaurant is a mixture of exposed bricks, loads of greenery, a pool table, and an outdoor dining area which is perfect for a lively dinner spot. Their specialty is the traditional brick pizza oven which they use to make many cool pizzas including some of their popular pies like the ‘Signature Aromatic’, and ‘Crispy Duck’. Besides that, they also serve a range of delicious appetizers such as the Sizzling Fajitas, salads, and sandwiches.
