Food, glorious food! This certainly should be the tagline to describe the Malaysian culture.
Without a doubt, Malaysia have some of the best foods in the region. We know it and are proud of it, as many of us would willingly travel cross-country on a road trip, with food as the main agenda!
Did you know, the love of food has got some foodies seeking out homes close to some of the best eateries? If you are a foodie looking to move into SS15, then you are in luck.
This bustling area of Subang Jaya is renowned for its scrumptious food and is one of the hottest haunts for the seriousss food lovers.
So, here is a list of eateries for you to add to your must-visit list, when seeking out your new home in SS15:
This cafe is literally a ‘hidden’ gem in SS15. Found in the unlikeliest of places, Jibril is located within a secret spot of the ice cream shop, Sangkaya (find the hidden door, people!). This place has the feel of a 1920s establishment.
Decorated with wooden furniture, antiques and exposed brick walls, this speakeasy cafe serves an array of delectable Asian and Western cuisine – with their salted egg butter chicken among one of the crowd-favourites.
Kotak is an Indonesian restaurant that presents a humble front. The food, however, takes this humble frontage to all-new heights!
The restaurant is famous for its Ayam Geprek which comes in 10-levels of spiciness – really living up to its Indonesian roots. Kotak is definitely a confluence of delicious food and a thrill-seeking journey (your tummy may not agree).
Dáo is a tau fu fah and soybean cafe. This cafe is a millennial magnet, but has the appeal and nostalgia of the "good ol’ childhood days".
The success of Dáo lies in the fact that it is able to recreate a humble and traditional dessert to something that becomes the talk of the town among the younger demographic.
4. Gold Chili
Gold Chili is not a restaurant, it’s an institution. It sees a constant stream of dedicated patrons at all times of the day (and it’s really no surprise why).
Many have described their signature dish, the buttermilk chicken, as ‘love at first bite’, and have even changed the minds of the salted egg yolk fans (a supposed rival to the buttermilk). No matter which team you’re on, it’s worth a visit!
Located at the ground floor of the trendy Empire Shopping Gallery, Serai is a must-go-to if you’re craving local flavours. With a menu offering choices of Malay, Thai and Western dishes, you would be spoilt for choice.
Perfect for families and large groups, Serai also offers large portions that are great for sharing. End your meal with a sweet treat from their array of delectable cakes and macarons.
6. Rojak SS15
Established in 1983, Rojak SS15 started as a humble little stall along Jalan SS15/3B, that served up glorious plates of rojak and cooling bowls of cendol.
It is a testament to their food, that even with the absence of a physical restaurant or an elaborate menu, it was able to command longgg queues during peak hours for years. Rojak SS15 has now found a new physical location within Subang Square.
If you’re looking for a fuss-free meal with friends over some sake, this is the place for you. Sumi-ka is a Japanese yakitori bar that serves up a wide array of delicious skewers, grilled meat and seafood, as well as a wide selection of sake (hello happy hour!).
8. Donutes Coffee & Bakery
This leading bakery-cum-cafe chain hails from Taiwan and made its way to SS15, to the delight of the residents and students around.
Serving up scrumptious baked goods and some pretty good coffee, Donutes is open 24-hours and has something to delight your sweet/savoury tooth every time.
9. Fei Fan Hotpot
Fei Fan offers up a Hong Kong-style hotpot experience at a reasonable price. Located in the SS15 Courtyard mall, this restaurant offers up handmade beef and pork balls, as well as fish noodles.
Due to their popularity, reservations are a must! Or you’re going to have to wait up to 30 minutes for the next available table. Not exactly the best idea if you have a hangry partner on hand.
10. Lim’s Fried Chicken
From its humble origins as a coffee shop (previously known as Wong Soon Kee), Lim’s Fried Chicken (LFC) sees a queue of devout foodies daily.
Offering piping hot fried chicken with a choice of either rice with sambal, or curry chee chong fun, LFC has now branched out to other areas in the Klang Valley.
11. Naj and Belle
The beautifully rustic feel of this place gives Naj and Belle its edge. Described by its patrons as a fancy hipster cafe, this establishment offers Instagrammable moments through their food and decor.
This is especially so of their famous desserts – Strawberry Watermelon Cake and the One Sweet Mess, which are a must-tries!
12. Mykōri Dessert Cafe
Mykōri brings us a new form of Japanese-style dessert known as kakigori – consisting of shaved ice with syrup or condensed milk (basically the Malaysian equivalent of the ice kacang). Due to their hype and popularity, Mykōri has expanded to 5 outlets all over Malaysia.
This bar and restaurant serves up Western fusion dishes as well as some of the best modern Malaysian dishes you’ll ever have tasted.
Located in the quieter section of SS15, the small menu at Rata offers some strong contenders, with the main one being its mutton fried rice.
Yilo is a bar and restaurant offering excellent Chinese hawker-style food with affordable prices (and fresh-tasting ice cold beer!). With its retro, old Chinese vibe, this is the perfect after-work spot or weekend hangout.
15. Jibby & Co
This Australian-inspired eatery offers up beautiful architecture alongside its scrumptious menu. For those who’ve always wanted the "Land Down Under" experience, here’s where the quintessential Melbourne flair can be found.
Located just outside Empire Shopping Gallery, Jibby & Co is the perfect brunch place, especially if you’re looking for the perfect cuppa – brewed to perfection from their selection of exclusive house blend coffees.
