Pahang is the largest state in Peninsular Malaysia, and the third largest in Malaysia, after Sarawak and Sabah. The Pahang River flows through this state. Other states surrounding Pahang are Kelantan to the north; Perak, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan to the west; Johor to the south; and Terengganu to the east. The South China Sea is on the east side of Pahang. The state’s capital is Kuantan and royal capital is Pekan.
Famous hill resorts in this state are Genting Highlands, Cameron Highlands, Bukit Tinggi and Fraser’s Hill. It is home to the country’s largest national park, Taman Negara. The beautiful beaches and islands off its coast including Pulau Tioman also attract many visitors. Tourism remains the state’s major source of income.
Many commercial properties in Pahang are developed to serve the tourism industry in addition to the residents. Such properties include shop-office lots and retail space. It is much cooler in the highlands with temperatures ranging from 16 to 23˚C. The monsoon season occurs from November to February. Heavy rainfall often causes floods in low-land areas.
The population of Pahang consists of Malay, Chinese, Indians and Orang Asli. Popular traditional handicraft items in Pahang are songket and batik. This state is also known for its weaving industry which produces beautiful silk cloths. Gamelan Pahang is a form of Malay classical music originating from this state. The fishing industry produces dried fish and seafood, one of which is the famed keropok lekor. Traditional local dishes include nasi dagang, bubur lambuk, puding raja and nasi kebuli.
