Kamunting is located in the District of Larut, Matang and Selama District in the state of Perak, and it is also the biggest satellite town of Taiping. In the 1848’s the Datuk Paduka Setia Long Jaafar Bin Abdul Latif who found tin ore in the black sand of the river about 8 years earlier in Taiping, had discovered by a happy accident another site that had tin ore, near Kelian Bahru, which is modern day Kamunting. The discovery attracted predominantly Chinese settlers to find their fortunes in tin mining and hence the town grew into what it is today. Nearby areas are Simpang Ampat, Bukit Mertajam, and Butterworth in the north west, and Kuala Kangsar and Batu Gajah, Perak in the south east.
Nearby suburbs to Kamunting include Matang, Kuala Sepetang, Simpang, Semanggol, Bagan Serai, and Changkat Jering. The two major highways that stretch from the north end of Malaysia to the southern tip of Malaysia, Federal Route 1 and the tolled highway North – South Expressway (AH2) run right next to the Kamunting area. Going northwards will bring the traveler to places like Simpang Empat Semanggol and Bagan Serai via Jalan Taiping – Bagan Serai. Southwards there’s Changkat Jering, Padang Renggas, and Kuala Kangsar.
Several parks are nearby for those who want to enjoy a day out among greenery and nature, such as the Taiping Lake Gardens and the Taiping Equine Park. For a greater experience, one can visit the Kaki Bukit Larut Waterfall or travel a little further to the Matang Mangrove Forest Park. Another major tourist spot is Bukit Jana, which has a waterfall and streams off the range of Bukit Larut. The Bukit Jana Golf & Country Club is also situated nearby. Plans for Taiping sports centre, which includes a 15000-seater stadium, indoor venues and extreme sports site, are still under consideration.
