Marang is a town and the seat of Marang District, in the state of Terengganu. The town is located on the South China Sea coast on the main highway between Kuala Terengganu and Kuantan. The main economic activity in Marang is fishery, but tourism is increasingly rising in importance. The Marang River still retains its dynamic natural ecosystem. Marang town is undergoing development and its facilities are constantly upgraded to cater the needs of the tourists and visitors that flock the area. Such facilities include car-park, hotels, resorts and chalets, restaurants and public toilets. Since time immemorial, Marang has retained its ‘cowboy town’ atmosphere where most of the shop lots and buildings are old. One unique trade about Kijal is that in certain locations coming into Kijal, there are ‘Elephant Crossing’ signs. Wild elephants forage at night and may cross the highway to other feeding grounds within their roaming range. Travelling within the town, due to the scenic environment that this town has, the public transportations covers limited places.
