Perlis is the smallest state in Malaysia. It covers a total area of 821 square kilometres. This state is situated at the northern part of the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It is neighbouring the Satun and Songkhla Provinces of Thailand on its northern border. The state of Kedah is to its south. The capital of Perlis is Kangar and the royal capital is Arau.
The state’s economy is powered mainly by the agriculture sector producing rice, sugar, herbs and fruits. Forestry is also important. A few popular tourist destinations in Perlis include a grape farm and a snake farm in Kangar, and Muzium Kota Kayang in Kuala Perlis.
Industrial properties are mostly concentrated in industrial development areas such as Sungai Chuchoh Industrial Park, Kuala Perlis and Padang Besar real industrial estates. Other commercial properties include shop lots, hotels and shopping malls. Popular residential properties include semi-detached houses, terraced houses and bungalows. There is also land for sale.
The weather in Perlis is generally hot and humid throughout the year, with its location so close to the equator. Temperatures may range from 21 to 32°C through the day. The wettest months of the year are from April to October.
More than 80% of the population in Perlis is Malay. This is followed by Chinese, Indian and other ethnic groups. Due to the state’s close proximity to Thailand, Perlis’ culture has strong Thai influence. Among the traditional music and dance performances reflecting such an influence include tarian canggung and tarian terinai. Many local dishes are also rich with Thai flavours. The art form of storytelling is preserved in awang batil, a traveling minstrel who travel to villages to tell stories with a small drum and flute. A local favourite sport is sepak takraw which has evolved to become a national sport.
