Perlis

Perlis is the smallest state in Malaysia. It covers a total area of 821 square kilometres. This state is situated at the northern part of the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It is neighbouring the Satun and Songkhla Provinces of Thailand on its northern border. The state of Kedah is to its south. The capital of Perlis is Kangar and the royal capital is Arau.

The state’s economy is powered mainly by the agriculture sector producing rice, sugar, herbs and fruits. Forestry is also important. A few popular tourist destinations in Perlis include a grape farm and a snake farm in Kangar, and Muzium Kota Kayang in Kuala Perlis.

The art form of storytelling is preserved in awang batil, a traveling minstrel who travel to villages to tell stories with a small drum and flute. A local favourite sport is sepak takraw which has evolved to become a national sport.
