Butterworth is the largest urban settlement in the city of Seberang Perai, Penang. George Town, the capital city of Penang, lies east of Butterworth and came into being a transportation hub due to its close proximity to George Town. Butterworth grew into a transportation hub in the latter half of the 19th century and was the transit point for shipping tin to George Town for smelting and export.
