Victoria Street (Malay: Lebuh Victoria; Chinese: 海墘新路, Pinyin: Hǎi qián xīn lù, Penang Hokkien: Hai1kni2 Sin3lor33 Click to hear) is a street in George Town, Penang. Two thirds of it is located within the core zone of the George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Victoria Street was laid in the late part of the 19th century. Until the mid 19th century, the area where Victoria Street is located was coastal mudflats with wooden piers running down to the sea.
Land reclamation that took place between 1880 and 1904 created new land that extends outwards from Beach Street. It provided new land which developed into the Chinese Trades Neighbourhood, a precinct of wholesalers and warehouses belonging to the Chinese community.
For a while, the properties facing Beach Street enjoyed an extended lot all the way to the sea. However, when Victoria Street was created, some of these lots were "severed".
The Yeoh Kongsi used to have its ancestral clan temple facing the sea. This was blocked with the creation of Victoria Street.
