Shah Alam started out as Sungai Renggam and was known for its rubber and oil palm plantations. It is now the Selangor state capital. Shah Alam is next to the Klang District of Selangor and it has since been granted the status of city in 2000. Shah Alam has housing areas and commercial areas scattered across several ‘sections’ and its economy centers on government related activities for the state government as well as manufacturing and services sector.

Shah Alam is easily accessible and enjoys good connectivity to its surrounding areas via major highways and main roads, such as the New Klang Valley Expressway, the Federal Highway, the Shah Alam Expressway (KESAS), the Kemuning – Shah Alam Highway, the Guthrie Corridor Expressway and the North-South Expressway Central Link. For those who rely on public transportation, the KTM Komuter train stops at Section 19, Section 17 and Section U20 of Shah Alam. There is also the LRT which stops at the Alam Megah LRT station and Subang Alam LRT Station. There is also a major bus and taxi hub at Section 17.

Residents of Shah Alam have plenty of choices when it comes to shopping for their necessities. One can easily head over to Aeon Shah Alam, SACC MALL, Plaza Shah Alam, Central I-City Mall, Anggerik Mall and the PKNS Complex where there are supermarkets and plenty of retail outlets, as well as restaurants and eateries offering a wide range of food choices. Besides this, Uptown Shah Alam in Section 24 is a popular place that locals frequent to for food and events.

There are many (both public and private) primary and secondary schools in Shah Alam. Higher education institutions in Shah Alam include University Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Univerity of Selangor, Management and Science University, and Shah Alam Polytechnic. The Chinese Taipei International School is also located in Shah Alam. There are also plenty of private clinics in Shah Alam as well as the government run Shah Alam Hospital in Section 7, which also serves as a training hospital for medical students. For recreation activities, residents of Shah Alam can enjoy the outdoors at the Shah Alam Lake Gardens, The Shah Alam National Botanical Park and the Alam Megah Recreational Park in Section 28. Residents who want sometime more exciting can head over the Wet World, a water theme park. Residents who are interested in sports and in keeping fit can head over to the Shah Alam Sports Complex which also houses  the Darul Ehsan Aquatic Center and a Go-Kart track. There is also the Shah Alam Extreme Park in Section 13.

In addition to this, Shah Alam has several places of interest such as the famous Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Mosque, also known as the Blue Mosque which is said to be the largest mosque in Malaysia. Completed in 1988, this mosque can hold up to 24,000 worshippers at one time. The Blue Mosque overlooks the Garden of Islamic Arts which features paintings, sculptures, calligraphy and architecture. The Selangor State Museum is also located in Shah Alam.

Residential homes in Shah Alam are both freehold and leasehold. In 2019, the median price for houses here at Shah Alam is RM400,000.00 while the median price per square feet is RM371.00.
