Pulau Tikus is a north-western suburb of Georgetown in Penang. Situated between the city centre and Tanjung Tokong, this upper class suburb was named after a small rocky island shaped like a mouse, located about 770 metres off the Tanjung Bungah suburb. Despite its name, the area is considered one of the “upper class” neighbourhoods with its fair share of mansions, bungalows and colonial buildings, and many high-end condominiums, such as those along Gurney Drive. Pulau Tikus is home to small minorities of Eurasians, Thai and Burmese. Pulau Tikus has been home to various cultures since the first days of British rule.
The aforementioned communities have built impressive worship places within Pulau Tikus, such as Catholic churches and Buddhist temples adorned with architectural designs of their native homelands. When Indian labourers were brought in to work the agricultural estates, the Indian community eventually built a handful of Hindu temples here. Pulau Tikus is served by two of Rapid Penang’s free-of-charge transit routes, namely Pulau Tikus Loop (PTL) and the Congestion Alleviation Transport (CAT) Tanjung Tokong route. Aside from that Rapid Penang’s routes 101, 102, 103, 104 and 304 connect Pulau Tikus with Georgetown proper, as well as other destinations on Penang Island, including the Penang International Airport, Queensbay Mall, Batu Ferringhi and Teluk Bahang. There are many tourist attractions located near Pulau Tikus which are worth visiting. Among the tourist attractions is Church of the Immaculate Conception, Dhammikarama Burmese Temple, Wat Chaiyamangkalaram, Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani Temple and Colonial Penang Museum.
Pulau Tikus is an affluent neighbourhood with many amenities easily within reach like banks, hospitals/clinics, parks, post offices, schools, restaurants, worship places and shopping malls. It is said that some of the most awesome foods are tucked away in this area. The Pulau Tikus Hawker Center is a wet market in the morning where traders and housewives go about their morning business but when night falls, it turns into a busy hawker centre with a variety of local delicacies. There are also many restaurants that offer tantalizing food around the area, such as Markus Restaurant, Sawara Restaurant, Le Perigord, Harvest Wok and Friendscino Pulau Tikus. But at the end of the day, nothing can beat the food served at the hawker stalls.
Residents can get their daily necessities from Pulau Tikus Mini Mart, Bu Zhi Dao Minimarket, Mini Market Koplan’s, Pulau Tikus Wet Market and Aishwarya Mini Market. There are many clinics in the vicinity in-case of a medical emergency, such as Clinical Child – Goh, Klinik Pakar Chua, Koe Klinik, Klinik Joel and Klinik Koay. Residents can rest and relax or even do some recreational activities such as jogging, cycling, or just walking at parks nearby, like Penang Municipal Park, Persiaran Gurney and Energy Bagua Berjaya. Belissa row is a favourite hangout at night with outlets like the dance club Bed Café & Lounge, Bistro Segafredo Zanetti Espresso, café The Coffee Bean & Tea leaf and other clubs nearby, like Mankatha Club Penang and Thirty Eight Degrees Celsius. There are many malls located in the neighbourhood that residents can visit to spend their leisure time either shopping or window shopping. Some of the malls are Gurney Plaza, Axis Complex, 1-Stop Midlands Park Centre, Marble Arch and Penang Times Square.
Pulau Tikus is home to a number of local public and private schools, as well as colleges. They are St. Christopher’s International Primary School, Adventist College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Penang Chinese Girls’ Primary School, Penang Chinese Girls’ High School and St. Xavier’s Primary Branch School. There are also many places of worship in the area. The places of worship are Soka Gakkai Malaysia Penang Centre, St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church Penang, Nattukkottai Chettiar Temple Penang, Masjid Jamek Al-Munawwar and Wadda Gurdwara. Other facilities are banks and post offices, such as CIMB Bank Pulau Tikus, Maybank Georgetown, Bank Simpanan Nasional @ Pulau Tikus, Public Bank, Ambank Pulau Tikus, Pos Malaysia Pulau Tikus and Penang Main Post Office.
