Kajang was founded after the Klang War in 1807 and has since been made the district capital of Hulu Langat in the state of Selangor. Kajang is linked with Putrajaya, the National Administrative Centre of Malaysia. Kajang rose to become a modern town thanks to coffee estates which were opened up around it in the 1890s. Some of the major neighbourhoods found in Kajang include Balakong, Bandar Damai Perdana, Bandar Sungai Long, Country Heights and Taman Delima. In terms of public transportation, the Kajang railway station is the main train station for Kajang where passengers can board the MRT or KTM. The MRT stations that serve Kajang are Stesen Kajang, Stadium Kajang, Sungai Jernih and Simpang Balak. Busses and taxis also frequent the area, making it fairly convenient for those who do not drive.

Being a mature township, Kajang offers many amenities that bring convenience and quality of life to its residents. The area is not lacking in recreational facilities as the area has many recreational parks that are scattered across the township such as Kajang Skate Plaza, Kajang 2 Lake Park and Taman Belia @ Sungai Kantan (Youth Park). Other than that, the Saujana Impian Golf Course is available for golf enthusiasts who want to practice at the driving range or go for a game at the course.

There is also the Hulu Langat District Police Headquarters located in the town centre. Both putting residents at ease should any emergencies arise. Banks and ATMs as well as petrol stations are available for the convenience of the residents of Kajang.

Educational facilities are not in lack in Kajang as there are plenty of primary, secondary and higher educational facilities available. Some primary schools include Rafflesia International School Kajang 2, SK Jalan Bukit 1 and SRJK(C) Yu Hua while secondary schools include SMK Jalan Bukit, SMK Saujana Impian and Tanarata International Schools.
