On the transportation front, the Iskandar Malaysia Bus Rapid Transit (IMBRT) entered its pilot testing phase in April 2021. The 3-month programme will test the buses’ capabilities and demonstrate the use of green technology, in line with the southern state’s modernisation of its public transport system. This IMBRT project is expected to create up to 35,000 jobs and increase Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for Johor.
Additionally, the first automated rapid transit (ART) buses arrived in Malaysia in January 2021 for the pilot testing programme. ART is a medium capacity transit system that enables a higher passenger capacity at a lower cost compared to light-rail transit (LRT) trains, and it operates on clean sources of energy such as electricity or hydrogen.
The multi-carriages are equipped with sensors that read the virtual tracks on the road, enabling it to automatically navigate its own route. It can travel up to 70km per hour, and carry more than 300 passengers with 3 carriages. Its capacity is expandable to approximately 500 passengers with 5 carriages.
The implementation of the ART pilot project will be a key stepping stone towards improving public transportation in Iskandar Malaysia. Malaysia will be the first country in the region to potentially adopt this technology.
