Build people's housing project in Lahad Datu: state assemblyman

19 Jun 2013

The state government of Sabah should build low-cost houses along the coast of Lahad Datu, before transferring residents affected by the incursion of Sulu militants, according to Datuk Mohammad Yusof Apdal (BN-Lahad Datu).

These housing projects are necessary to ensure the well-being of the affected residents, he said, noting that the security forces plan to close off Kampung Tanduo in Lahad Datu — the area where the intruders have landed.

“I also urge the state government to gazette villages which have been occupied for more than 20 years, as Bumiputra villages or as resettlement areas, to meet the needs of the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM).”

Mohammad Yusof also praised the government’s plan to upgrade the existing airport at Lahad Datu and to build a new one at Silabukan.

“To meet the increase in populace, the construction of the airport must be accelerated. I am confident the airport will be the focus of domestic and foreign tourists and help spur the economy,” he added.

Meanwhile, Datuk Seri Nasir Tun Sakaran (BN-Senallang) called for the establishment of more security control posts in strategic areas, especially in ESSCOM, including Kudat, Kunak, Sandakan, Semporna and Lahad Datu.
