Bridge Linking Mid Valley and KL Eco City Collapsed

A foreign construction worker was killed and five others were injured when a 70-metre under construction pedestrian bridge near Jalan Kampung Haji Abdullah Hukum and Mid Valley Megamall collapsed.

The pedestrian bridge was supposed to link KL Eco City and Mid Valley Megamall.

KL Eco City-developer SP Setia confirmed that the incident occurred at the Abdullah Hukum project site.

One Vietnamese worker was killed in the incident, while six injured workers (two Vietnamese, two Bangladeshis, an Indonesian and a Pakistani) were sent to the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre for treatment.

Among them was a Pakistani worker who had his leg amputated.

Notably, the 23-year old Pakistani worker, Rais Anjum, was driving the forklift when the under-construction bridge collapsed yesterday (30 November) at 3:30pm, said a fellow construction worker.

Rais found himself trapped as his leg was pinned under the rubble and in between the forklift’s wreckage.

“He was pinned there for about four hours. As the debris was too heavy to move and Rais had lost a lot of blood by then, paramedics had to act fast. They were left with little choice but to amputate his legs in order to save his life,” said the worker.

The workers were sitting under the bridge for their lunch break when the tragedy occurred.

Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Sharul Othman Mansor said the bridge was 80% completed when the incident occurred.

Following that, four roads were affected by massive jams – Federal Highway from the arch, the Kerinchi Link after the Pantai toll plaza, Kerinchi Intersection from Bangsar South or Pantai Medical Centre and Jalan Syed Putra from the Kuen Cheng School till the Robson Intersection.

This was due to the road closures to make way for rescue workers.
