TRX’s centrepiece tower to be ready by 2018

The 1,440ft Signature Tower in the Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) is expected to be the world’s 15th highest building once it is completed in mid-2018, but still shy of the 1,483ft Petronas Twin Towers.

According to its developer, Mulia Group, the iconic tower has an estimated gross development value (GDV) of more than RM3.5 billion and a total net lettable area (NLA) of 2.65 million sq ft.

TRX’s centrepiece tower will stand on a 149,381 sq ft land parcel, said Mulia Group’s CEO Datuk WH Lai. It will consist of six basement levels and 92 floors, with a typical floor plate measuring about 34,000 sq ft.

“Yesterday, we began pouring concrete for its massive 20,200 cubic m. mat foundation, or about the size of eight Olympic swimming pools,” he told the media on Saturday during a briefing on the tower’s construction status.

Once hardened, it will weigh about 50 million kg, making it one of the heaviest concrete pours ever seen globally. Specifically, it comprised 19 million kg of construction aggregates, 16 million kg of sand, 8.5 million kg of cement, and 2 million kg of ice to address the extreme heat created during the process.

In May 2015, Indonesia-based Mulia Group signed an agreement with TRX’s master developer, 1MDB, for the construction of Signature Tower, with the land deal valued at RM665 million.

Situated in KL’s newest financial centre, the skyscraper will feature a square and a circle – symbolising equality and strength in Islamic architecture – to make it compatible with the other large-scale structures in the capital.

According to Lai, they are working on an aggressive schedule and employing advanced technology to finish the tower as fast as possible.

“The reason for this is because we need to catch the momentum and get the tenants inside. If we prolong the project, there will be a prolonged financing cost to it.”

Meanwhile, he revealed that that Signature Tower will be near to the upcoming Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) interchange station, which can handle around 500,000 passengers per day once it is ready by 2017.
