There are surely more than 10 tasty reasons to visit the KL Sentral area, especially foodie haven Brickfields just across Jalan Tun Sambanthan. It’s always packed during lunch breaks, and long queues at popular eateries are a common sight. Great grub!
Due to space constraint, this article gives a glimpse into only the top 10 makan places that offer some of the most tempting Chinese, Indian, Malay and Western dishes around.
Try them and then explore others on your own. Don’t judge a book by its cover: Some of the best eats are found in unassuming food courts, coffee shops, roadside (rather lane-side) stalls, and even meals-on-wheels. Enjoy!
[1] Money’s Corner Food Court
It has a wide variety of mostly Chinese food. For those “rice buckets” who can’t do without it, the stall selling chap fan (also called economy rice or mixed rice) alone has over 20 appetising chicken, pork, fish, bean curd or tofu, egg and vegetable dishes in all manner of cooking and taste.
Also available at Money’s are prawn mee, char kway teow, pork knuckle rice, bak kut teh, yong tau foo, pork mee, fish head beehun, over 10 types of porridge, Indian banana leaf rice, Japanese lunch sets and Western dishes.
The prawn mee in piping hot soup comes with decent pork slices (unlike the paper-thin pieces served elsewhere), whole prawns (not miserable slices), quarter of a hardboiled egg, crunchy bean sprouts, kangkung and topped with aromatic fried shallots. The teh O with ice was robust, not watered-down versions.
[2] Stalls on Lorong Chan Ah Tong
Both the Indian non-vegetarian and vegetarian fare did not disappoint. Among the stalls is Selvam’s Corner which offers over 20 dishes including its best-selling deep fried fish and chicken, fish head curry (one fish head was actually over a foot long), and mutton and chicken curry.
[3] Restoran Chat Masala
One of the best traditional Indian vegetarian eateries in the city, its popular thali set comprises kootu, poriyal, masala, sambar, kara kuzambu, papadam and a choice of rice or chapati. The vegetarian mutton and chicken were fabulous.
[4] Jassal Tandoori Restaurant
The North Indian food here is the real Punjabi cuisine. My firm favourite palak paneer of cottage cheese cubes simmered in smooth, pureed fresh spinach was absolutely wonderful with garlic naan.
[5] Annalakshmi
Savouring the vegetarian buffet of North and South Indian delicacies at the Annalakshmi restaurant, located within the Temple of Fine Arts, is itself a cultural experience.
[6] Vishal Food & Catering
Its spicy, aromatic chettinad dishes from Tamil Nadu are served on banana leafs.
[7] ABC Bistro Café
People come here for its Nasi Kandar, an Indian Muslim dish of rice topped with lashings of fragrant curries and vegetables plus fried fish, chicken, beef, lamb, prawns or squids.
[8] Legend’s Claypot Briyani House
Briyani chicken, mutton, seafood or vegetarian sets are served in claypots. The long grain basmathi rice cooked with masala spices gives the dishes a distinct flavour.
[9] Restoran Puteri
One of the oldest eateries in Brickfields, it offers traditional Malay dishes and desserts.
[10] teaPODS café
A quaint little place favoured by backpackers, it mainly serves Western dishes. Don’t miss the gourmet burger of crusty bread with homemade mutton patty, cheese, onion, tomato and lettuce plus fries on the side.
Being able to live within walking distance of these great food spots are usually only a dream, but the upcoming development within KL Sentral not only fulfils foodie and visitors dreams, but also provides an amazing network of public transportation.
