My Home, My Story: Shobana Dayvan

I can recall this humorous moment when we were about to purchase our very first house. The house belonged to my uncle who had settled down in the States, and he intended to sell his Malaysia house off.

We had never been to his house before, but he had shared some photos of the interior design with us which we fell in love with instantly. The house was rented out before that, and he told us that the tenant had shifted. So we decided to visit the house and collect the keys from his caretaker.

We used an app to reach the house since we were not quite familiar with the location. The house number is No 9. Trusting the app, we were notified when we reached the place; and both of us didn’t note the house number in our excitement.

Quite happy to see the luxurious poshy house, we immediately got down to have a closer look. There was an old aunty sweeping the porch. She saw us, greeted us, smiled and immediately invited us inside.

We were surprised that there were actually people in the house! We couldn’t reach my uncle or the caretaker to confirm the matter.

Upon entering the house, the interior looked different from what we had seen in the pictures. Before we could question the aunty, she brought us a catalogue which contained some nutritional products and started explaining each one of it to us. It took her 15 minutes to complete her explanation. We were served some nutritious chilled drinks too thereafter.

Immediately we knew that something was amiss. We then asked the aunty what was the house number. She told us that it was No. 99. We smiled and pretended that all was fine, and to not disappoint her we purchased two bottles of nutritional drinks and left. We laughed inside the car and promised never to trust any GPS app 100% and to be alert always!
