Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) plans to build a third Klang Valley MRT Line to reduce travel time within the capital.

In fact, the company has appointed an independent consultant to study said plan, the first report of which is expected to come out by Q4 2016 or Q1 2017.

“Based on the findings, we can share more information on the route,” said Director of Strategic Communications and Stakeholder Relations Datuk Najmuddin Abdullah.

He noted that the third line would have a circular track and not a long stretch, with the fully underground passage providing services around the city centre.

Najmuddin also revealed that as much as 58 trains earmarked for Sungai Buloh-Kajang (SBK) Line’s first and second phases are set to arrive in stages by end-2016 and would undergo intensive testing from 1 October.

“For the first phase of the SBK Line, 24 trains will be used in which 18 trains will cater to daily operations, while the rest will be used as reserve trains for emergencies,” he said.

“So far, we have received more than 40 trains from our earlier order ahead of schedule and they are undergoing the process of fitting and setting such as installing the seats.”

The first phase of the SBK Line starting from the Sungai Buloh station to the Sematan Station will be operational in December, while the rest of the route from the Sematan Station to the Kajang Station will begin operations in July 2017.

Spanning 51 kilometres, the RM23 billion project will feature 31 stations and is presently 89 percent complete.

Najmuddin said the government will announce the fares for the SBK Line in due course.
