CNN has listed Penang as the second best destination to visit in 2017, after Prince Edward Island in Canada.

Other Asian places on the top 17 list include Thailand’s Isaan and China’s Chengdu.

Compiled following consultation with CNN experts from across the world on their favourite destinations, the list described Penang as one of Asia’s best street food destinations, offering a mix of traditional Chinese, Indian and Malay dishes, as well as fusion cuisines such as Baba Nyonya, or Peranakan.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng welcomed the result and thanked Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz for his efforts in promoting Penang as a global tourist attraction.

“This is good news to start the New Year.”

“We should feel proud of this mention, as it has helped to boost the reputation of the state and country,” he said.

“Penangites don’t need to go anywhere else, now that we are recognised as one of the 17 best places to visit.”
