The number of people using the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) has now surpassed one million since it became operational, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, reported the New Straits Times.
But more individuals will be able to benefit from a larger network of public transportation comprising buses and trains, once the second phase of the MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang (SBK) Line opens in July 2017. Construction work is on schedule and the development is 95 percent complete at present.
“Although the MRT SBK Line Phase 1 had been completed and fully operational, the focus and works by MRT Corp remain unfinished,” said Najib.
“We have launched 12 stations for Phase 1 of the SBK Line on 15 December 2016 and there are still a remaining 30km [portion], which will pass through 19 stations to be completed in SBK Line Phase 2,” he noted.
Not only will it run through densely populated areas such as Kajang and Cheras, it will also improve accessibility to popular tourist destinations like Pasar Seni and the National Museum, which previously was not widely served by public transport.
To provide smooth connectivity, SBK Phase 2 will feature six interchange stations linking the MRT network to other train services like KLIA Transit, KLIA Express, Monorail, KTM and LRT. These are located in Kajang, Maluri, Bukit Bintang, Merdeka, Central Market and the National Museum.
Moreover, Najib encouraged commuters to comment regarding MRT’s services, including frequency of trains and feeder buses. They can send their feedback via phone at 03-7885-2585, or email to suggest@rapidkl.com.my.
